MAD SCIENCE PRESCHOOL WORKSHOP MENU
ADVENTURES IN AIR How can something that is invisible have the power to both move and slow things down? What relies on air for movement? Your kids will discover the power of air through demonstrations and hands-on activities.
COLOUR We will introduce your preschoolers to the exciting world of colours using chemical reactions and, yes, even rainbows! Your students will get their hands into colour mixing with liquids, gels and paints.
EYE TO EYE Students will use telescopes, binoculars and other scientific equipment to see the world in different ways. They will be shown the different parts of the eye using an anatomical model. Your kids will be amazed as we demonstrate what tricks their eyes can play.
KEEP IN TOUCH We will show your children first hand how sensitive the tips of their fingers are. They will see just how difficult it is to identify objects using only their sense of touch. They will take home a project they made using this sense.
LISTEN CLOSELY With a wave motion model and a twirling tube in hand, children will learn that sound travels in waves and can be heard in a variety of pitches. Children will also be privy to the surprising sound effects the Mad Scientist can make from ordinary materials.
WORMS Welcome to the world of worms! Children will use magnifying glasses and other scientific tools to explore the fascinating life of a worm! We will leave your class with its very own wormery!
The following school age workshops may be adapted for a preschool audience:
BUGS Welcome to the realm of insects! Learn about their fabulous flying abilities, their unique eyesight and the ways that they defend themselves against predators. See how camouflage works and investigate how bugs can be helpful to our environment. Discover the characteristics typical of insects and build your own bug model. Take home a "Bug Box" to continue your explorations in your own backyard.
DRY ICE Explore the three states of matter. Turn water to ice in 30 seconds, build a giant bubbling potion, carbonate plain drinking water and create the same awesome smoke illusions used in the movies.
HARNESS THE WIND Hold on to your hats, because this exploration of the awesome power of wind will blow you away! Discover how wind can be harnessed to fly, to power a mill, and luckily for skydivers, to break a fall! Students will build wind wheels to measure the power of the wind!
MAGNETIC MAGIC Investigate the powers and every day uses of magnets. Test for magnetic fields; learn how electromagnet works and take home your own set of levitating magnets!
MINERAL MANIA Discover planet Earth! Peek beneath the Earth’s crust to discover what’s inside. Recreate the process of rock formation and devise ways to classify and identify rocks and minerals. Experience the thrill of panning for "gold"; the gold you find you can take home for further study and identification.
ROCKET LAUNCH Discover the dynamics of rocket flight. Touch and feel our scale rockets while learning HOW and WHY they fly. Take part in a NASA-style launching of a model rocket which soars up to 100 metres into the air and then returns to earth by parachute… PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO CANADIAN REGULATIONS, WE CAN NOT LAUNCH ROCKETS AT SCHOOLS THAT ARE WITHIN 9 KM OF THE CENTRE OF AN AIRPORT.
SEEKING OUR SENSES Learn to be a sense-ative person! Test your vision with our mind-boggling illusions. Learn about and try to read Braille. Your senses will never seem so simple again!
STUNT PLANES & GLIDERS The Wright Brothers would be proud as we follow in their footsteps and learn the fundamental principles of flight. Build a "football" plane, control surfaces and your very own loop-flying stunt plane. You’ll be a Top Gun after this workshop!
SUN SMART This workshop will educate children about the power of the sun and the need to protect themselves from the sun’s radiation. They will learn that the ozone layer is our first line of defense against ultraviolet (UV) radiation and the differences between visible and invisible light.
TANTALIZING TASTE Experiment with taste sensations while "mapping" out your tongue. Use lifesaver testing to compare your sense of smell and taste. Carbonate water, make your own Coke or Pepsi and take the Mad Science taste challenge… | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
